About 160-km northeast from Hanoi lies the magnificent Halong Bay, an amazing complex of 3000 chalk islands rising out of the South China Sea - strange, eerie and very beautiful with bizarre cave formations & grottoes. A World Heritage site since 1994.
Up north 250-km from Hanoi, high in the Hoang Lien mountains, is the old hill station of Sapa (1600-m). This area is inhabited by the H'mong and Zhao hill tribes. Every weekend there is a market when the local people come into town to trade. This is also an area where tourists have to be sensitive to local culture and traditions.
